Riska Medicine (Strattera):For the management of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the reduction of the impulsiveness and hyperactivity characteristic of ADHD, the first and most effective treatment strategy was stimulant medication. The first evidence-based medication was stimulants in ADHD; it was approved by the FDA in 2002. It works by increasing the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, which helps to improve attention and focus. This approach has been successful in the management of ADHD symptoms, with improvement in attention, focus, and impulsiveness and in reducing hyperactivity observed in patients with ADHD.
Strattera has a unique mechanism of action distinct from stimulants, which is why it has been shown to have an affinity for receptors in the brain, particularly norepinephrine and dopamine. It inhibits the action of norepinephrine reuptake and increased the availability of dopamine, preventing the dopamine transporter from carrying down the dopamine metabolites that contribute to ADHD symptoms. As a result, the brain receives adequate levels of norepinephrine and dopamine, which are involved in attention, and hyperactivity, which in turn improves the ability to concentrate and respond effectively to stimuli.
The primary use of Strattera is as a first-line treatment for ADHD in patients. It has been approved by the FDA for the management of moderate-to-severe ADHD, and is approved for both as maintenance therapy and as treatment for symptoms of ADHD in adults and adolescents. It is also approved for the management of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and adolescents. Strattera is available as a capsule and as an oral tablet, and is typically taken once or twice per day. The typical starting dose is 25 mg once per day, adjusted to 50 mg once per day. The maximum daily dose is 600 mg per day, and can be adjusted based on the patient's response to the medication.
Strattera may interact with other medications, including:
The side effects of Strattera are similar to those of other stimulant medications, and are generally mild and transient. Common side effects include:
Rarely, Strattera has been reported to cause liver problems, a rarely reported side effect. In addition, Strattera can interact with other medications, including:
Strattera is available as a capsule and oral tablet, and is typically taken once or twice per day. Dosages may be adjusted for patients with hepatic impairment, patients with renal impairment, patients with severe liver disease, patients who are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), patients on steroid therapy, and individuals with a history of seizures or neurological disease.
Strattera is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to it or any of its ingredients. Strattera is also contraindicated in patients who have a history of hypersensitivity to alcohol, propylene glycol, or any of its ingredients.
Pregnancy is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as it can cause birth defects. Strattera is not recommended during breastfeeding, and patients should consult their healthcare provider before using it during pregnancy.
